About the show
How They Think
A podcast about the way people think, not just what they think.
Most conversations stay on the surface. How They Think goes deeper. Tyler and Derek sit down with people from all walks of life to explore the experiences, ideas, and mental models that shaped who they are. Guests don't need to be famous. They just need to have something worth saying.
Why we started it
Because apparently we always have to ask why.
The show started the way most good ideas do: with a conversation that went somewhere unexpected. Tyler and Derek kept finding themselves deep in discussions that felt too good to keep to themselves. So they decided to stop keeping them.
How They Think is the result of that decision. It's a space for the kind of conversations that make you rethink something you thought you already understood: about people, about ideas, about yourself.
No agenda. No script. Just two people who are genuinely curious, and a guest who has something worth exploring.
Meet the hosts
Co-Host
Tyler Cobbs
The one who asks the question everyone was thinking.
Tyler brings curiosity, emotional intelligence, and a background in communication and psychology to every conversation. He has a gift for making people feel heard, and then asking the follow-up question that opens everything up.
He's the one who notices when something important just got glossed over, and won't let it go until it's been properly explored. His instinct is always toward the human side of any story.
Co-Host
Derek Llamas
The one who noticed the detail that changes everything.
Derek brings analytical thinking, historical context, and a design sensibility that shapes how the show is structured and how conversations are framed. He's drawn to systems, patterns, and the logic underneath things.
He's the one who asks 'but why does that actually work?' and keeps asking until the answer is satisfying. His instinct is always toward clarity and precision.
Two very different ways of thinking.
Tyler and Derek don't always agree. That's part of the show. Their contrasting approaches, emotional intuition versus analytical precision, create a dynamic that pushes conversations further than either of them would go alone. The tension is productive. The disagreements are honest. And the conversations are better for it.
What we're here for
Conversations worth having.
Depth over celebrity
Guests don't need a platform or a following. They need to have something worth saying.
Honesty over polish
We don't script conversations. We follow them wherever they go.
Questions over answers
The best episodes leave you thinking, not just informed.
People over topics
Every episode is ultimately about how a specific human being sees the world.
